NEBOSH - ICT Assessment

NEBOSH is a leading global organisation which provides health, safety and environmental qualifications. Tens of thousands of people from over 130 countries take NEBOSH qualifications every year.

A large proportion of its income is processed directly through its IT systems. It’s therefore critical that NEBOSH’s future infrastructure is fit for purpose, scalable and agile enough to cope with change. NEBOSH recognises that there has been a massive change in the way IT infrastructure is now provisioned and wanted to assess its options.

NEBOSH’s server and storage infrastructure is split across three sites with data hosted at its Head Office and at two private data centres.

The server, storage and backup infrastructure was purchased over three years ago and the contract was due for renewal in September 2019.

Shaw Consulting carried out a detailed, technical assessment of NEBOSH’s current ICT environment. This resulted in a document describing the technical specifications of each physical and virtual server in use, an understanding of the applications being used, their interdependencies, and database requirements.

We carried out a detailed assessment of the current costs, and proposed costs for upgrading the environment to a new hardware platform (as proposed by their incumbent provider).

Using this information, we assessed in detail the options for moving this to cloud platforms (Amazon and Azure) and the associated costs for networking, backup, security, etc.

Each option assessed detailed the benefits and the negatives of each option, and financially compared these in tables and using graphs.

The report we produced provided:

  • Executive Summary
  • Detailed the current environment
  • Detailed each of the options appraised
  • Provided conclusions and recommendations
  • Appendices which included; Current virtual and physical server specifications/Detailed breakdowns of costs/Each Cloud Platforms Virtual Servers specifications and costs.

The potential savings identified over a four year period ranged from £200k to £250k when measured against the current position.
